52 Super Series Barcelona Sailing Week

At the season finale of the 52 Super Series in Barcelona, the US racing team Quantum Racing secured their fifth season championship. In the light wind conditions, only five out of ten races could take place, which did not allow the German helmsmen Tina Plattner (“Phoenix”) and Harm Müller-Spreer (“Platoon”) sufficient chances for a comeback.

Led by league co-founder and team owner Doug De Vos, Quantum Racing won four out of five possible races in the leading Grand Prix series for monohull boats and also secured gold at the Rolex TP52 World Championship 2022. In the fight for the season championship, Tina Plattner on “Phoenix” with her world-class tactician Tom Slingsby had chances to challenge Quantum Racing until the end.

Harm Müller-Spreer’s “Platoon” team landed in second place behind Quantum Racing in Barcelona after a significant improvement throughout the season and finished third in the overall standings. The owner and helmsman from the North German Regatta Association expressed satisfaction with the cooperation with tactician Vasco Vascotto, who replaced John Kostecki this season. Müller-Spreer confirmed Vascotto’s commitment for next year and expressed confidence in winning again.

The season finale of the 52 Super Series in Barcelona was broadcast as a live production, which provided an additional element of excitement and entertainment for the audience. As a drone pilot working with the TV team, I had the opportunity to capture spectacular aerial footage and show the teams’ breathtaking maneuvers in real-time.

The live production allowed fans to experience the races up close and feel the atmosphere on site in the future America’s Cup metropolis Barcelona. The event ended with a roaring celebration in the impressive Gothic ambiance of the historic building Llotja de Barcelona, where the owners, teams, professional sailors, organizers, and hosts celebrated their winners, the season, and the anniversary. The large family of the 52 Super Series, including half of the America’s Cup entourage, was gathered at the event, underlining the significance of this regatta series in international sailing.

With the successful live production and growing enthusiasm for the 52 Super Series, this highly demanding construction class has established itself as one of the leading monohull boat regattas. The exciting races and the collaboration of world-class sailors such as Tina Plattner, Tom Slingsby, and Vasco Vascotto show the attractiveness of the series for sailing enthusiasts around the world.

In the coming years, the 52 Super Series will continue to offer exciting races and promote new talents. The combination of impressive live productions, top-class sailing, and the collaboration of international teams and sailors will ensure that the 52 Super Series continues to play an important role in the regatta sport in the future.
